Labor Day Weekend

Ahh, Labor day. Marking the end of summer, and the coming of fall. The seasons change, and so does our little Avery. From a little tiny booger of a baby last year, to a smiling, hand-clapping, peek-a-booing tornado of a toddler this year.
Avery and Daddy admiring the ducks at the pond. Avery points and yells "DUCK! DUCK!!"

On Saturday, we celebrated Grandma Shih's birthday at Taps in Brea. I guess its become our tradition to celebrate birthdays there, because there is really no better way to celebrate than with their Cream Ale and fresh oysters and king crab legs. Although Grandpa did complain this time around that it was a bit more bitter than usual. Bad batch perhaps.
Happy Birthday Grandma! Avery works a fresh shiner on her forehead where she banged it on some railing...oye.
Can you spot the difference in this picture? Same place, Same Baked Alaskan dessert, Same Grandma/Grandpa/Baby. Avery was only 3 weeks in this picture. hehe
Its party time!

Sunday was Kate's 2nd birthday party, at the same park and gazebo where we had Avery's 1st! We felt bad for John, who did all the set up and decorations with only one helper on a super hot day. We had like a team of 6 people setting up! hehe But it was a very nice party, and the weather cooperated too, breezy and shady afternoon. Avery insists on walking everywhere now, so our backs are permanently hunched over holding onto her little hands as she totters around the park, chasing bubbles, stepping on crunchy leaves, and dancing.
We'll just stand here and look at everyone!

I was a little nervous when Elaine said she hired a "soft clown" for little kids, because I'm a big wuss when it comes to clowns, but it turned out to be lots of fun! Avery was totally into the songs, dancing, and clapping her hands with everyone. Fun fun!Check out my star!
Kate blows out her candle and goes straight for the Hello Kitty head. DELICIOUS! nom nom nom

Neighbors pic! It was a nice day for a party! Happy birthday, sweet Kate!
Hehe. Avery at Kate's 1st birthday party last year. My how one year flies! Avery was only 5 weeks old, scrawny and red. hee hee. Now the two of them are running (tottering for Avery) around, fighting and sharing toys, Avery following Kate around and copying what she does... so cute!

This day was also the day that we tried for the first time to put Avery on 1 nap a day. Eek! I was concerned because Kate's birthday party was from 4pm-7pm, and Avery woke up at 8am that day which is later than usual, so if we went by her normal pattern, then she'd take a morning nap at 11am til 1pm, then afternoon nap at 5 til 6pm, and we'd probably miss the whole party! So we decided to go for a 1 nap day. Granted, I kind of sensed that she was ready for it, because lately she's been fighting her naps, even skipping her afternoon nap one day and got so overtired because she went from like 12:30pm to 8pm... So here's what we did. Since she woke up at 8am, we played until 10am, then took her out for brunch, then grocery shopping (have to keep her occupied and busy), until we got back at 12:30pm. I fed her a bottle of milk, and then she went to nap. So tired, she slept til 3pm! Then woke up, fed and changed her, and off we went to kate's party. perfect! came back at 7:30pm, gave her a bath and milk, and she was down by 8pm. She slept clear through 8am the next morning!

On Monday, we went over to Jerome and Maria's house for some pool play! Jasmine is growing so fast - she's easily as tall as Avery, and much chubbier - she's definitely passing Avery up! I think the only thing Avery has on her is head size, with that big noggin of hers. Jasmine got her hair cut and now she's got a chic little baby bob. hee hee, so cute.

Hai! i don't have matching swimming bottoms cuz Mommy lost it. I prefer to stand in the pool, thanks.

It took her forever to let us put her in the pool in the first place. Then she stood there in the water playing with the toys for 15 minutes before she finally put her butt in the water. By then it was time to come out, and then we hold our hands out and say "bao bao?" (chinese for hug) she shakes her head vehemently and pushes daddy's hands away and continues playing. lol. Then we let her play a few more minutes and took her out, pissed about having to leave against her will.Bath time after the pool! Avery watches Jasmine get her hair washed, Maria tells her to "tilt your head back" and pours water over her head. Avery must be thinking "Dude, you crazy, I HATE water on my head!" she has a tendency of getting really really angry when you pour water over her head, even if it doesn't even come close to her eyes. So she wouldn't even go into the bathtub, as you can see. Just stood outside and watched. I tried putting her in a few times, and i got cries of bloody-murder. Big wuss.

Whatchoo lookin at?

Monday's nap time did not go quite as smoothly as Sunday's. She seemed tired early in the day, even though she woke up later at 8am. We decided to go with a 2 nap day, and put her down at 11:30am. she slept till 1pm. Then we went to Jasmine's and played until 5pm. It crossed my mind that maybe we can luck out again and go without the 2nd nap. But she was tired and super cranky so we decided to head back home. She whined all the way home because she was tired and she, for some reason, does not fall asleep easily in the car. Then when we got home, I fed her milk, and put her to sleep. But she wouldn't sleep and kept crying. But she had to have been tired, it having been 4.5hr past her previous nap time. So she finally fell asleep after 40 min. Then we had to wake her up after half an hour because I didn't want her to ruin her bedtime. Oye! That did NOT work out as well! She was still tired and ANGRY. But she eventually got over it after an hour or so... and went down to sleep that night around 9:30pm without complaint.
