Memorial Day Weekend

Ah May. Always this time of year when Avery gets sick. The time of year when it can turn from hot to cold in a matter of minutes. Last year she got sick right before Memorial day weekend and we spent the weekend at home. This year we had to cancel a playdate with Tyler and Kate's swimming lessons. Sad! Ah well. Atleast she's better now. I will now do a day-to-day documentation of her cold.

I always get sick in May :(

Sunday thru Tuesday before: random sneezes, about 3-4 a day, progressing to 5-6 sneezes a day. At first I didnt' think much of it, figured it was just something in the air. We spent Tuesday together and she seemed totally fine, even though on Monday, Diana mentioned that she seemed a bit cranky in the morning. At the playground on Tues i mentioned to Elaine about her sneezes and she warned me to watch out for watery eyes, then fever.

Tuesday at class in the library. Story time! No red flags yet.

Wednesday: When I got home from work, I saw a watery left eye. Uh oh. We took her to my parents house for my Uncle's birthday, where she was happy playing with everyone.

Still no fever at this point at the dinner. Transferring some germs to Auntie Wendy!

By 7pm, she was beat, and fever started. Oh boy. That's when I knew she was catching the cold. I gave her some water on the way home and the fever came down a smidge. She went to bed around 99-100 degrees.

Thursday: Woke up early at 6:30am crying, runny nose. I spent the morning at home with her and she was tired so I let her take a nap at 8:30, she rolled around in bed until 9am and napped until 10:30am. Went to my mom's house. Fever creeped up and she hung around 100 all day, reaching 101 by the time i got off from work. She napped at my mom's house for a couple hours too. No appetite, just drank some milk. A little clingy when she saw me, but other than that she's in a pretty ok mood throughout the day, playing with toys and at most demanding people to sit down and play with her. Dressed her in shorts and a long sleeve. When she went to bed, her fever had hit 102.7 degrees. We gave her some generic baby tylenol and the fever went down as she slept.

Friday: Woke up at 7am, a little tired but in a relatively good mood. Fever went down, she was back to normal. I figured it was ok. But Elaine advised me to go see the pediatrician because it was going to be a long weekend (read: no doctors on call for 3 days) and her fever may have gone down artificially because of the baby tylenol. As I waited for the doctors office to open at 8:30am, I noted that her fever had inched up to 100. The office told me to swing in so we went.

Turns out she had an ear infection on her left ear. Antibiotics for 5 days. Allegra allergy meds for her sneezing/stuffy/runny nose. Glad I listened to Elaine and took her to the doc, because i wouldn't have been able to get antibiotic prescription the next day when Avery would likely be in real pain! I filled the antibiotics but the pharmacy didn't have Allegra onhand so i just didn't fill it. I really don't like flooding her with medication, plus, Allergy medicine? The kid just has mild symptoms of cold, she'll get over it. And she did. No more sneezing after Friday, and her nose cleared up over the weekend, now she just has remnant runny nose. HOward was glad he didn't have to spend $52 on the Allegra medicine too. $52 dollars?!

Incidentally, i must have caught something from Avery because i woke up on Friday morning with a swollen lymph node, big fat ball sticking out of my lower right jaw. I used to get these all the time as a kid - my mom would slap a salonpas on my neck and send me off to school, haha. Haven't had one of these since early high school. So friday kinda sucked for me too.

By Sunday and Monday, She was out and about in no time, business as usual, such as:
Pooping on the neighbors grass... (relax, there was a diaper involved)
Taking a walk in her car. Except half way through, she got out and wanted to push it herself, with me sitting inside.... "Mommy sit down car! Avery push!" And proceeded to push the car all the way home. I guess someone's strength is back!

Whew! That was ok. Lasted about one week. The only lasting effect is that she's been napping so much during the day (2 naps, 2 hours each) that she wakes up at 6:30am each morning well-rested. Now I have to figure out how to adjust her back to normal so she'll sleep til 7-8am.

I'd also like to add that at Avery's 18 month appt, she was hating the stethoscope and otoscope (the one they stick in her ear to check for ear infections) so after that we went and got a doctors tool bag from Toys R Us so she can play with all the tools. It seems to have worked because when I told her we were going to the doctor, she actually go excited and grabbed her toy otoscope and was ready to go. Then when the nurse checked her ears and lungs and heart rate, she was totally fine, looking at the tools curiously and then looking at me with a knowing smile like: "Hee hee, I have one too!". So that was good. But now the problem is she wouldn't let them weigh her, clung to me like her life depended on it. We had to like, weigh the two of us together, then i put her on a chair and weighed myself, to figure out how much she weighed -_-. Work in progress!

So on Monday, we dropped a recovered Avery off at Grandma/pa's for the day while Howard and I spent the day cleaning up our office in anticipation for the big move to Mira Loma in 2 weeks. Then we went to watch Iron Man 2, which was awesome!! Afterwards we went for a quick dinner at Outback and I surprised Howard with an early 5 year anniversary present, the one thing he's been whining for the past month for: an iPad. haha!
Pat myself on the back for that one! I actually bought the iPad 3 or so weeks ago and hid it in the office hoping to make it until our anniversary 6/18 to give to him. Spent 3 weeks worried about him seeing the credit card charge, since he manages all the finances, and also listening to him whine each time an iPad commercial came on tv. lol. But the more I waited the more i started feeling guilty that it was just sitting in the hiding place gathering dust while he was coming to terms with not having the iPad. HAHA.

Happy Memorial Day, everyone!
